Primary Students Learn about “Healthy Smiles” at WVMS
Primary students took part in a program called “Healthy Smiles. ” Darcie Schaffer, manager of Volunteers in Medicine Dental Services, presented it, assisted by dental students Christina Carter of McCann School and Danielle Spadine of Marywood University. The group read a story and then went over brushing, flossing and regular dental checkups. Volunteers in Medicine works with the United Way of Wyoming Valley on health habits for children.
What this looks like in practice
In a Primary room, children generally arrive into a settled space and begin choosing their own work. A morning holds long stretches of focused activity, some group time, and time outside. Teachers give lessons to one child or a few at a time rather than addressing the whole group at once. Families can ask the school how the day is paced and what the drop-off and pick-up look like.
The practical gain in these years is independence that carries over into the home. A child who has practiced pouring, fastening and putting work away tends to do the same with their own things. Attention grows, so a child can stay with a task longer. Reading and number work arrive when the child is ready for them, not on a fixed date.
